The Mahagony box that came with it to store the pieces was Ok. It felt cheap it didn't fit the pieces with them standing up, I had to basically toss them all in sidways on top of eachother. That seemed odd to me, and an "Exceptional" set should atleast have a decent storage mechanism. The pieces were nicely weighted, and the crafstmenship was decent. They were even, and looked the same across different pieces of the same type (not much variance, which is good).

In this letter, Howard Staunton writes to an organizer of the 1857 American Chess Congress. He speaks of his hopes for the event to further promote interest in the game in the United States. Staunton also included a rough proof of his forthcoming additions to The Chess-Player’s Handbook in order to receive feedback from the players in the tournament.

After three years, the design registration expired and was not renewable. On August 11, 1852, Nathaniel Cooke entered into an arrangement with Howard Staunton for the exclusive use of his name and facsimile signature on the labels. This next group of labels was produced under this new arrangement. Labels within each of the three color groups were numbered sequentially without regard for the size of the chessmen. There are plenty of places that sell nice, affordable wood sets. Not that many sell "luxury" and "collectible" sets though.

Lowe Company, Windsor Castle Company, and the Pacific Game Company began producing plastic sets, which were advertised in Chess Life and Chess Review beginning in the 1940s. One of the Drueke family descendants has started making new chess boards, using the old style and finish. The mahogany boxes which housed the earliest boxwood and ebony chessmen were distinctive. They had unique handmade dovetail joints, soft, slightly rounded corners, and they bore their manufacturers label on their undersides. Some of the earliest boxes also bore a small green label on the underside of the lid. Printed on that small label were the words “The Staunton Chessmen Jaques, London.” This label is quite rare and a good indication that the box is one of the earliest made to house the Staunton chessmen. Later mahogany boxes would carry their labels on the underside of the lid.

The colors where nice, but it was hard to tell because of them being so dirty and covered with glue. I eagerly opened the set to inspect what I was anticipating would be a very beautiful, exceptionally crafted chess set (as the website so eloquently puts it).
