Dyson's Supersonic Hair Dryer Is Getting New Heat Controls

dyson hair dryer holder

The RevAir has an exceptionally large footprint compared with most dryers. The entire corded machine weighs about 8 pounds and is the size of a toaster. The hose-attached handheld wand alone weighs more than our heavier dryer picks (around 2 pounds), but we found that this is not terribly problematic because very little motion is required to use it. It’s no more effective than our other picks, but if you want the most pleasant hair-drying experience possible, the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer provides that. This dryer has an unusual design that makes it extraordinarily nice to use. Speed and heat are the only features that matter for drying your hair efficiently, and with a 55 mph airflow that exceeds 245 °F, the Rusk W8less Professional 2000 Watt Dryer is one of the fastest and hottest dryers we tested.

Its buttons are strangely placed and unlabeled, and it doesn’t have a cool shot. It used to be our favorite dryer that came with a straightening pick, but we now prefer the Pattern Blow Dryer. The Revlon 1875-Watt Infrared Hair Dryer produced a wind speed of 45 mph (measured directly in front of the nozzle), slower than the speed we got from our picks.

For the initial iteration of this guide, we timed the models drying a swatch of hair from a wig wetted with 5 grams of water, with the dryers on their highest setting. We took basic stats on our dryers, using a weather meter to test the speed and heat and a postage scale to weigh them. Often our own readings disagreed with the manufacturer-stated specs.

What about the Revlon One-Step and other hair dryer brushes?

James Dyson ranks number five on the Sunday Times Rich List, with a net worth of 23 billion pounds.

The Supersonic hasn’t been toyed with for more than seven years until now, and Dyson’s engineers have been working toward making the new hair dryer easier to use. Of the Dyson Supersonic lookalikes, the Karrong F350 seemed the most promising to us, but it ended up being half as fast, with no way to control speed separately from temperature—the hotter it got, the faster it got. The motor sits in the handle of the dryer rather than in the head. The handle is straight and a tad thicker than that of the Rusk W8less, too. Dyson says the motor placement makes the weight of the dryer more balanced, since it’s not top-heavy.

It weighs less than a pound, it has an 8-foot cord (one of the longest we found), it’s notably comfortable to hold, and overall it has the best combination of features we deem important. The W8less comes with a concentrator, which is helpful for straightening hair, but it does not come with a diffuser. The Hot Tools Professional Black Gold Turbo Ionic Salon Dryer (DC Motor) is extremely light at only 14 ounces. But it also has the most buttons and slides and switches of any hair dryer we’ve ever tested, including a cool-shot button, a power-boost slide, an ion select wheel, and switches for speed and temp—whew! The gorgeous GHD Helios 1875W Advanced Professional Hair Dryer is heavier and slower than our pick, the Rusk W8less—and three times the price.

dyson hair dryer holder

Although the 1,875-watt Revlon Compact Styler is a wallet saver at around $10, the savings do not make up for the dryer’s added heft, its lack of attachments, and its reduced wind speeds compared with those of our picks. Compared with the Rusk W8less, the Amika Accomplice Compact Dryer (currently unavailable) is heavier, limited to a lower max temperature (215 °F), and double the price. However, its 9.5-foot cord ties with that of the GHD Helios for the second-longest cord among the dryers we’ve tried. You get a styling concentrator, a flyaway attachment, and a wide-toothed comb, plus a “gentle” air attachment and a diffuser.

It also comes with five magnetic attachments, including a diffuser, all of which are exceptionally easy to add or remove mid-blowout. If you don’t care about weight, consider the InfinitiPro by Conair 1875-Watt Salon Performance AC Motor Styling Tool. Commonly found in drugstores, this dryer produces airflow that’s faster (65 mph) than that of our top pick and almost as hot (205 °F). At 1.3 pounds, however, it may feel heavy after you spend a couple of minutes holding it above your head.

It weighs just over a pound, has a cord measuring 5.5 feet, and comes with a concentrator and a diffuser. But the mediocre specs, along with the gimmicky red lights that flash while you’re blow-drying, kept this dryer from being a pick, even though it was a particularly inexpensive model at the time of our tests. The RevAir is unlike any other hair-drying, heat-styling tool we’ve tested. For people with Type 3 or 4 curl patterns especially, this vacuum-like device is gentle on fragile strands and can cut down total drying time significantly. One tester, who usually requires two back-to-back appointments with a professional stylist at Drybar, now achieves similar drying and smoothing results with the RevAir in as little as 20 minutes.

If you have curly hair and prefer using a diffuser to dry it, you have to buy one separately (though it’s best to buy a hair dryer that comes with one). The hair dryer comes with five attachments that contain heat shield technology, where the surfaces of the attachments stay cool throughout use. Other features include three airflow levels and four heat modes, including a constant cold mode. Despite the Supersonic’s flaws, compared with other dryers we’ve tested, this one truly feels like a luxury to use every day. One tester found that the heavier cord tired out her arms when she was drying the top of her head, though resting the power bar (which most dryers do not have) on the counter helped. The sound the Supersonic emits is a high-pitched whine, with none of the low rattle that other dryers put out.

That blowing air was around 200 °F (more if we held the dryer in place for a few moments). Although some dryers achieved faster wind speeds than others, interestingly that didn’t end up translating to notably or consistently faster dry times once we used them on our hair. At an impressive 11 feet long, the currently unavailable CHI Touch 2 Dryer’s cord is the longest of any dryer we’ve tested, but this dryer is more expensive and much slower than the Rusk W8less. It also has a mere one year of warranty coverage, and its nonintuitive touchscreen felt gimmicky. The Bio Ionic 10X Ultralight Speed Dryer is a tad lighter (0.92 pounds) than our top pick and has a slightly longer cord. However, the dryer doesn’t have separate wind-speed and temperature-control settings (if you want hot air, it must also be fast).

What your hair looks like comes down to technique, products, and, in large part, its natural characteristics. The Remington Damage Protection Hair Dryer D3190 comes with a diffuser and a concentrator, but it’s bulkier and heavier than other models we tested. The Conair InfinitiPro SmoothWrap Hair Dryer is slower and has a shorter cord than all of our picks. However, it is lightweight (a pound), and it reaches temperatures above 245 °F. Shannon Palus reviewed hair dryers for Wirecutter from 2015 to 2017.

It offers seven suction power levels and three heat settings (high, low, or the no-heat cool shot). Although this dryer is just as fast as pricier models, it’s the heaviest of our traditional hair dryer picks, and its attachments can be hard to remove. At 0.6 pounds, the Gold ’N Hot Ultra-Lightweight Dryer with Tourmaline is the lightest dryer we’ve tested.

Kim Kardashian Dyes Hair Platinum Blonde Again Before Met Gala Us Weekly

dyed blonde hair

This platinum-blonde hair dye from Revlon has more than 1, and 5-star reviews. If you've ever found yourself scrolling through hair salon Instagram searching for inspiration, you've likely seen wheat blonde hair many, many times over. The cool-toned hue appropriately looks like a field of wheat—so pretty, but brassiness comes through like a wrecking ball in no time. The central blonde tone of the look is beeline honey blonde, but there is a gradience in it too.

Best Blonde Dye for Grey Coverage: L'Oreal Excellence Crème Permanent Hair Color

With thick hair and a textured hairstyle, it looks lovely – clean and angelic. But if your hair is fine or you prefer sleek hairstyles, you better opt for a dimensional blonde color like one of the balayage examples listed above. The golden pops really withstand the test against the light copper base, helping it completely stand out.

Golden Beige Blonde

Consider it the best way to quickly and easily revive your blonde and make it look like you just stepped out of the salon. If you’re committed to coloring your hair at home, this formula—which comes with additional hydrating products—is pretty foolproof. That said, some reviews said the color they achieved didn’t match the box, but that could be because of their original level of blonde. Blonde box dye is the easiest, and often the cheapest, hair dyeing product to procure. It is easy to use and available in a variety of supermarkets and convenience stores. Plus, it comes in a full kit with everything you need to lighten and color your hair included.

Believe it or not, color theory is a big part of finding the right color-depositing shampoo for you — you want to pick the opposite color on the color wheel for your hair. In general, blondes should use purple shampoo, redheads should use green and brunettes should choose a blue shampoo. “For personalized advice, it's best to consult a professional hairstylist who can assess your skin tone and help you choose the most flattering blonde shade,” she says. Mix your bleach in the recommended ratio in your mixing bowl and prepare sections of foil, if you are using it. Foils are a good idea if you have very dark brown or black hair and want to achieve a lot of lift in one bleaching session. Reading up on color theory can help you save your hair from disaster.

Ash blonde is ideal for anyone who wants a natural-looking shade without the warmth of some blonde hair colors. Once you’ve chosen your perfect shade of blonde hair, it’s time to get to work. Make sure to follow the instructions included with the packaging of your at-home hair color kit to get the best results. Remember that it’s a good idea to stick within two shades of your natural hair color when dyeing your hair at home.

Dyeing Your Dark Hair Blonde: Everything You Need to Know

Us Weekly has affiliate partnerships so we may receive compensation for some links to products and services. Celebrity hairstylist, Chris Appleton, took to TikTok to show off Kardashian’s final look. In the clip, Kardashian walked ahead of Appleton and gave a soft smile for the camera as she glanced back at him. "It's better to do a low volume peroxide, over a longer period to avoid damaging the cuticle of the hair," he says. "Naturally dehydrated hair, like kinky and curly hair, should be wary of high volume or high-intensity peroxide because the hair is already more fragile due to its natural tendency towards dryness." Blonde has always been Rachel McAdam's go-to color, but our favorite iteration is this version with a warm ginger tint.

A subdued, creamy blonde that's also infused with platinum and golden accents? This shade is significantly warmer than its cousin silver blonde, but has an icy edge to it. Chloe X Halle's very own Chloe Bailey puts a new meaning to blonde ambition with these platinum locs.

Shoppers setting out with dark brown hair write that they love the golden blonde the Light Natural Blonde 9N shade gives them. Experiment with dirty blonde hair and get a soft brown blonde base that can be brightened with lighter balayage for spice and special accents. A solid cool-toned blonde lacks dimension, that’s why all modern fair hair color solutions involve darkened roots and sometimes a whole dark underlayer with lightened ends. Such hair color ideas unfold beautifully in all sorts of half-up hairstyles, updos, and braided styles. This flirty look features dark blonde hair color enhanced with a soft balayage. The technique allows the light hair to play peekaboo, flashing out when styled away from the face.

It is important to avoid being washed out with such light colors, so make sure to help your facial features pop with a rich-colored lipstick and mascara. Blonde hair color is so versatile that you might not even know there is a specific name for each shade of blonde hair color. Honey, caramel, strawberry, butter, champagne blonde – most shades sound so tasty that you cannot deny your hair a treat. Not to mention platinum and golden blonde hues suggesting that your hair can be your most precious jewelry.

This odor is pleasant and not too overpowering, even for those who may have an aversion to strong smells. L’Oreal Paris’s Excellence Crème Permanent Hair Color is formulated to provide 100 percent grey coverage on all hair types. The rich crème formula of the dye is able to fully color even stubborn grey hair and leave you with an even, vibrant blonde color. It is a good choice for anyone who wants to cover up their greys and revitalize their locks. In addition to all over blonde dyes, Garnier Nutrisse offers a blonde highlighting kit.

"Because they interact poorly with professional products," even a color correction may result in multiple rounds and added stress to your already vulnerable strands, she says. With something as expressive as hair color, the idea of permanence doesn't really align. Permanent hair color is, perhaps unsurprisingly, difficult to remove. "I personally only use permanent color when 100 percent grey coverage is needed [for] this very reason," says Rae. Pineda points out that the additional wait time before your first shampoo can do favors for your scalp's health, too. The oils that your body naturally produces on the scalp will not only hydrate but also protect your hair, she tells us.

"It is definitely best to avoid heat for the first 48 hours after a color appointment," says Rae. And when you are ready to get back to heat styling, she says a heat protectant is a must; her recommendation is this leave-in treatment from Pravana. Thankfully, there are many protectants like this one out there that will not only shield your new color from hot tools but will also keep UV rays from penetrating your strands and altering your new color. Months after the event, Kardashian opened up about the behind-the-scenes preparation that went into her look. We don’t have a shampoo bowl, so we have to rinse it a million times.

Best for Highlights & Root Touch-Ups

Take this trend to the next level by teaming it with the sleekest, straightest styles, made super-glossy thanks to the lightest spritz of our shine-boosting EIMI Glam Mist. Before applying dye all over, Gould strains the importance of doing a strand test first to make sure your hair reacts well to the formula. (You wouldn't want to damage your hair to the point of breakage, now would you?) Plus, he says doing this will help you see how the hair color will actually turn out and how long it needs to process. The natural oils on your scalp actually serve as a protective barrier to guard against irritation from the chemicals in the hair dye, so you want them there before you apply dye. "This will irritate your scalp and can become painful. The hair should be clean of product but not of your natural oils, as it acts as a protectant." If you want to avoid the bleaching process at home and don't want to spend too long strand testing, it might be a great idea to try and aim for a darker honey golden blonde.

Best Blonde Hair Colors You Should Know About

You should be looking for a professional powder bleach that can offer at least 5 levels of lightening. Going from dark to blonde hair is a serious process and requires several different materials to achieve the transformation. You need all of these materials if you are going to bleach your hair at home; missing one of the items could result in an unfortunate hair mishap.

–but the trend has taken on an edgier look in more recent years, often with all-over platinum color. Brownish blonde, also known as “bronde” hair color is a warm, natural-looking blonde hue that looks lovely with fair and medium complexions and light to medium eye colors such as gold, light brown or blue. When coloring dark hair blonde, achieve a rich, contrasting color by asking your stylist for a dark blonde base with cool-toned, buttery balayage highlights on the mid-lengths and ends. This blonde shade pairs best with fair skin tones and light eyes such as blue, hazel or violet. For a lovely sandy blonde look, ask your colorist for a dark blonde base with cool, beige--toned balayage highlights on the mid-lengths and ends. Bronze creamy blonde hair color is a warm, beachy-looking hue that is naturally lovely on medium, tawny complexions with light- to medium-shade eye colors such as blue, gray or light brown.

This kit includes an application brush specially designed to create subtle blonde contrasts throughout your hair. It is a good choice for anyone who already has blonde hair and wants to enhance it further. Additionally, you can look for conditioning ingredients such as vitamin E, fruit oils, and keratin. When mixed into the dye formula, these ingredients can help hydrate and protect hair from becoming too damaged during the coloring process.

Whether you stocked up on your favorite blonde dye (the 6 pack of dye from Naturtint is great for this) or you have dye left over from the last time you colored, proper storage is essential. Due to the lack of harsher chemicals, the color of this dye does not last as long as some of its competitors. It tends to start fading within a couple of weeks and may need to be touched-up often.

There is usually a wider range of blonde coloring and shades available with professional colors, and you will be able to know the exact strengths of all developers and coloring ingredients used. WALLA Color Charm Permanent Liquid Hair Color is a great example of this. Ceramides and collagen are blended into this formula to help hydrate hair. The dyeing process can be very drying, and these ingredients help to protect each strand’s integrity. An additional pre-color treatment is included and protects hair from product buildup and damage. This product is great for anyone who may be concerned about the negative effects of dyeing their hair.

Off-Grid Monocoque Tiny House Takes Shape From WWII Planes

off grid house

Prefab homes are not only affordable and easy to install, they also offer unique advantages. These benefits include energy efficiency, construction speed, minimal waste, and sustainability. A prefab house is one wherein the individual parts or pieces are manufactured in another site, such as an off-site factory. The pieces are transported to the home site and assembled on the property. It is a fast and affordable way to build a home compared to the traditional construction methods. Custom pricing is available for each home model, but each one offers the sustainability and flexibility that suits your off-grid lifestyle.

Off-the-Grid Homes for Sale Right Now

off grid house

The way that it works is that you first choose one of their prefab home designs. Then, you work with your architect or one of their design partners to adapt it. Would it be better to build your own off grid home to your specifications? Because the vernacular of off grid architecture is grounded in sensitivities as opposed to conforming to a distinct style, off grid homes come in more shapes, sizes and forms than often presumed. Here are three vastly different, yet equally eloquently resolved, interpretations of off grid architecture from across the Indo Pacific Region.

Assessing the resources available at the chosen location

I mean, could we all trade our city's water supply for natural springs? The truth is that pursuing an off grid lifestyle is only possible but increasingly popular. Just keep in mind that these tiny houses are so small that two people will have a hard time living in one, but after all, they are mostly made to be used by one person.

What are Off-Grid Prefab Homes?

Now that we are all more or less familiar with sustainability; living in isolation; and the pitfalls of consumerism, it seems a fitting time to reconsider off grid living upon closer inspection. Once the premise of a brave few, today a popularly pursued sustainability ideal; off grid living is steadily gaining widespread momentum. Despite the shift in collective perception – from ‘hippie-dippie’ philosophy to exemplar for sustainable living – life off grid remains largely uncharted. The passive architecture of off grid living has never been so well honed, nor so in vogue. Which is just as well, with the rationale for going off grid never more real. Besides, it is important to consider the environmental impact of the house.

Best Off-Grid Prefab Homes (With Prices)

But you can't change property location, size, and exposure to sun and wind. Many of the people we know who live off the grid (including us) are still within an hour's drive of a town, for four big reasons. Nadine Englebrecht followed passive building principles to design this South African house, which is characterised by a double-height conservatory at its centre. This rural cottage sits on the edge of a lake in the Scottish Highlands and is crafted from natural materials that complement its scenic location. It has a tapered form designed to help minimise heat loss, while the gable's glazing is slightly set back to help the building self-shade and keep cool in the summer.

Understanding Solar Power Costs

You can get a complete house within a day and the price is around $420. Have you ever wondered if there’s a lifestyle out there that not only reconnects you... Therefore, you can choose the Sitka prefab home no matter where you intend to live, especially since the manufacturer delivers anywhere in North America. The single story cabin layout is flexible to fit your small family or group of friends living together. The assembly requires little to no mechanical assistance, but it varies according to the site conditions.

While the overall process isn’t unlike building a more conventional home, there are still special considerations to make. Another thing to consider when building off-grid is that you still shouldn’t forego homeowner’s insurance. The risk of fire, flood, etc. is typically just as high as if you lived in a more traditional home. Before building, you need to be aware of all local building codes and requirements. To avoid a steep fine, be sure to research them before even picking a plan. In addition to a sleeping loft, this modest bedroom, tucked in the rear of the cabin, offers enough space for a ranch-hand to rest after a day of rounding up cattle.

The design of the prefab house is modern and minimalistic as well. Off-grid prefab homes are a game-changing solution for home buyers because they offer the benefits of off-grid functionality and sustainability. Aside from choosing from various styles and sizes, these off-grid homes offer energy efficiency and minimize carbon footprint. A few features integrated into off-grid prefab homes are solar panels, composting toilets, and rainwater collection systems. Look for these off-grid functionalities if you want to build a self-sustaining home.

Many who have a homestead do eventually transition into entirely off-grid living and being “half on / half off” is a popular phase in the process. The great thing about living in an off-grid home is that you are in control of nearly every aspect of how you run your home, so it can be as rustic or modern as you prefer. When it comes to serving up a hearty lunch, chipped enamelware is the order of the day. The blue willowware in the open-faced cabinet is saved for special occasions. Since the cabin has no electricity, candlesticks, sconces and oil lamps can be seen throughout the rooms. The wood-fired, cast-iron stove was in home owner Vince Kontney’s possession for more than 40 years before it found a home at the Centennial Ranch cabin.

Building an off-grid home is more than just a construction project; it’s a process of creating a sustainable and self-sufficient lifestyle. By carefully considering the location, resources, design, and regulations, you can create a home perfectly suited to your needs and the environment. Once you’ve selected a location, assess the natural resources available to you.

All designs and floorplans are available with permit drawings and engineer stamp. Choose merino wool or synthetic materials for cold weather they offer excellent insulation properties. And watch for our upcoming series on off grid clothing options that are also great camping and hiking clothing choices. If you live far from the power grid and city life, you'll need to change your habits regarding waste disposal. Now, this isn't just theoretical talk; we use composting toilets at our cabin in northern Ontario.

We review these houses because of the high-quality materials, easy build process, and long-lasting life. These models are among the company’s best-selling units for off-grid lifestyle. The model house features vaulted ceilings, glass walls and windows, and high windows to promote natural lighting and fresh air into the space. In addition, Method Homes also manufacture eco-friendly prefab homes that can be customized to fit your unique needs.

Next, we have an affordable house design that offers a modern look and green opportunity. It is an energy-efficient passive house with a solar and SIP kit. First, we have The Athru, a tiny house plan for off-grid living. This 124 square-foot design comes with one hideaway bed, one bath, kitchen, and trailer foundation. The Ridgeline model from Deltec Homes ranks among the best off-grid prefab homes right now. Like the Solar Farmhouse, it belongs to the company’s Renew collection.

They do have a couple of options for these as well but you can also use your own septic and rainwater harvesting system and install them once the house is built. The price of prefabricated Method Homes starts at around $100,000. Built with survivalists in mind, this Idaho home comes with water rights to two nearby creeks and includes two insulated water tanks for use in emergency situations.

Until recently, we depended on a battery bank system for off grid energy storage. We need this for night-time energy and on cloudy days when sun exposure isn't optimal. However, remember that these systems can work for years without depending on fossil fuels or suffering from frequent power outages.

Instead, homeowners choose to live autonomously and create these systems for themselves through options like solar or renewable energy and contained waste-water systems. However, they can have a beautiful kitchen with energy-smart appliances, Internet (including a great Work From Home setup!), and even a luxurious bathtub. They sit in dry, desert landscapes in the Central Valley and are scattered over rooftops in Los Angeles’s urban center. By last count, the state had nearly 47 gigawatts of solar power installed — enough to power 13.9 million homes and provide over a quarter of the Golden State’s electricity. The tiny house can also be sold as either a basic shell or turnkey model, and it can optionally run fully off-the-grid with solar panels and a rainwater capture system.

This survival house is a milestone for South African architects to learn the concept of house design. If you are a wood structure lover, this will be the perfect design for your off-grid house. This is a highly crafted house that takes minimum space for accommodation. The house is specially designed for a specific location in South Africa. With zero environmental impact, the house is built without cutting any trees in the forest. An expanded wooden deck makes the house perfect for natural exploration from the living area.

Removing Scale From a Tankless Water Heater

As it turns out, those dreams turned into this very site about off grid living for beginners. Just keep in mind that you also have to calculate the costs of transportation, foundation, and different permits in order to have to total costs of the prefab off grid house. Available in the continental USA, these cabin kits are made from real wood. According to their website, the parts aren’t very heavy and it only takes about 8 hours for two people to build a small shed. The prefab home company Modern Tiny Living specializes in tiny homes.

But batteries and gas-powered generators (or propane-fired generators) are expensive, and those of us who live off the grid need batteries and generators — because the sun doesn’t always shine. While it is possible to grow your own food in addition to producing your own energy and managing your own waste, living off-grid doesn’t completely remove you from needing everyday necessities. The day-to-day costs of living off-grid are not unlike living in a traditional home, less a few bills as you are taking care of these things independently. Even if you prefer to build, sometimes it can be helpful to your building process to have a look at existing homes for inspiration and ideas. The price for building an off-grid home can change dramatically depending on the level of luxury you’d like for your home.

This was sufficient for Markos to found his own studio and to develop his vision for an airplane-inspired tiny house, in collaboration with prefab specialists BlokBuild and engineers Price & Myers. But Mr. Hochschild added that he was not convinced that such an approach made sense for most people. “We build 100,000 new homes a year in California, and I would guess 99.99 percent of them are connected to the grid,” he said. That phenomenon will increasingly play out in less sunny regions like the Northeast over the following decades, the group forecasts. One of those residents is Alan Savage, a real estate agent in Grass Valley, who bought an off-grid home six years ago and has sold hundreds of such properties.

But the electricity it produced sometimes cost up to 70 cents a kilowatt-hour, or three to five times the rates charged by larger utilities in the state. Eventually, the town of Kirkwood took over the utility and connected it to the state electric grid. However, after my own experiences as an off grid homeowner and through many, many discussions with other people who live off the grid, the costs vary GREATLY. The money you'll need to live off the grid depends on land cost, housing type, and energy system setup. Using sustainable materials in your building can really improve its environmental footprint and longevity.

“I don’t think I’ll ever go back to being on the grid,” Mr. Savage said. Building and operating microgrids could provide a steady source of income to companies like Sunnova. That could essentially transform the rooftop solar companies into the kinds of utilities that they have long fought against.

Off-grid solar energy could also serve a variety of productive uses for these populations, powering solar water pumps (SWPs), refrigerated storage, or food processing machinery. Designing an off-grid home goes beyond aesthetics; it involves creating a functional and energy-efficient space. Consider factors such as the home’s orientation to optimize passive solar heating and cooling, the size and placement of windows, insulation, and the integration of renewable energy systems. Cob homes, made from a mixture of clay, sand, straw, and water, are a testament to the longevity and resilience of natural building materials. This type of construction is durable, sustainable, and naturally insulated, making it energy-efficient for heating and cooling.

Next, select a suitable location for an off grid home, and start adapting to solar power usage and waste management. Look at a tiny house, a cob house, a yurt, an Earthship and a log cabin, for starters. Look at the cost of moving off the grid for EACH potential property. From local laws to water sources and renewable energy potential, there's a lot to consider. It means deciding the best way to generate your own power through renewable sources like solar or wind energy.

I work from home to make money off the grid, we homeschool, and we love the idea of being self-sufficient. And others just want to try their hand at homesteading the "old-fashioned" way. Maybe an off grid home is the only way to afford a property. Some people simply want to get away from the noise, pollution, and fast pace of city life. Or they can't stand being dependent and are ready to pursue a more self reliant lifestyle.

Portions of Crumiller’s collections have been highlighted in two previous WCHOF exhibitions. Not only interested in acquiring artifacts but also learning about their origins and histories, Jon conducts research on the evolution of chess set styles, usage, and manufacturing. He shares this information with the global community of collectors, including his fellow enthusiasts in Chess Collectors International. Jon provides curious chess devotees from around the world with beautiful photos of his stunning collection as well as some of the fruits of his meticulous research through his website

The Staunton Standard: Evolution of the Modern Chess Set

All chessmen were crafted from Japanese Tsuge wood in natural and either red or black lacquered finishes, depending on the design. It took quite a while for the new design to become popular. Initial sales were slow, in spite of Staunton’s frequent assertions to the contrary in his weekly column. A portrait of Howard Staunton posing with other leading chess players in the July 14, 1855, issue of the Illustrated London News includes a Barleycorn set, not a Staunton set, on the table! But slowly, surely, the advantages of the Staunton standard won out over all others, and by the end of the 19th century it had become the prevalent chess set pattern.

This is a bit long, as it is a complete recap of my experience with them over 2 weeks. The Staunton chessmen debuted in mid-19th century London, a center of chess activity as well as manufacturing and trade. One of the Staunton patterns’ influences as well as sets by many of Jaques’ competitors are on view in this case.

Advertised as “a great improvement on Staunton’s design,” the set has metal knights. Like the British Chess Company, which made knights from an early type of plastic, the manufacturers of this set may have been trying to address the problem of the expense of carving knights. The king in this set is over double the height of the one in the Sinquefield Cup set, which is also on view in this gallery. The Sinquefield Cup set itself is a smaller version of the Imperial Collector set. This oversized set is one of only two that exist—the other is a gift from Camaratta to Rex Sinquefield, the founder of the Saint Louis Chess Club and the World Chess Hall of Fame.

Howard Staunton never claimed to be the designer/creator of the chess piece pattern that bears his name. The Staunton chess pattern was patented in March 1849 by Nathaniel Cooke (misspelled as “Cook” on the patent document). Cooke was the business partner and brother-in-law of Herbert Ingram, the primary founder of the ILN.

I liked the style of the Grandmaster pieces for the price, and considered it to be the cheapest, decent looking set (including the knight carvings). The website really talks these sets up and sells them as being "Exceptional" pieces of craftsmanship. I chose to upgrade the set to the Boxwood/Rosewood combination (I like the look of Rosewood, opposed to Ebonized boxwood). It was more expensive, but I wanted to get the best I could for my budget. The board it came with was their standard "Tournamet" style board made of Maple/Mahogany. I could'nt believe a board made of those woods would be so cheap.

This praxis was later changed to affix the label to the underside of the lid of the mahogany boxes. The earliest labels were white with a decorative black fleur-de-lis. A slightly different label was designed for sets numbered 600 or so to 999.

In addition, two of the pawns had misshapen bottoms such that they did not sit flat on the board. Lastly, the board itself was slightly warped and did not sit flat. After sending photos by email they sent a new board, replacement pawns, and one extra leather pad to replace the worst of the pads that had peeled off. The one thing they couldn't fix without replacing the entire set was the fact that most of the leather pads were not centered on the piece bottoms. All of this suggests shoddy finishing work on their sets, even special limited edition commemorative sets like mine. The Victorian Ornament Staunton Set represents a decorative variation of the Staunton style chess set.

To accommodate this new development, Jaques and other game equipment firms began to market the two-faced chess clock. These early labels were numbered sequentially, so set #120 could be an 8.9 cm wooden set in a small mahogany box, while set #121 might be a large ivory set in a large Carton Pierre casket. Little known is the fact that the earliest labels also have the Jaques London imprint invisibly embossed into the label. The same tool used to mark the bases of their kings was used to make this imprint. This little-known fact alone should be worth the time you have taken to read this article.

This is very much like my experience with thechesstore...They sent me all reject chess pieces with loose felt, but they wouldn't refund my shipping costs. So I'm stuck with this poor quality set...At least HOS refunded all your money, that's not bad. Architect Nathaniel Cooke (his name is spelled incorrectly in the drawing) registered the Staunton pattern in 1849. Influenced both by the Staunton pattern and Central European patterns, the Austrian Coffeehouse Set was the standard style for play in Central Europe during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Players used it in major tournaments including Vienna 1898, Semmering 1927, and Karlsbad 1929. The dramatically curved necks of the knights may have influenced the Steiner Master Chess Set (also a part of this exhibition), which was designed by 2010 U.S.

These included chess sets like this one, as well as mirrors, brushes, glove stretchers, paper knives, and watch stands. This early set of Jaques Staunton chessmen is paired with a beautiful Leuchars board, which has decorative elements that refer to chess pieces on its corners. The back of the board has paper maché decorations that complement those on the casket, or box, containing the chess pieces. Leuchars was the first retailer of Staunton chessmen, which it began selling in September 1849.

I recently became interested in chess, and decided I wanted to buy a decent wooden chess set. I shopped around, and looked on these forums for suggestions. I came accross House of Staunton (google for their website if you are unfamiliar with them) and fell in love with their sets.

Though adorned with decorative surface textures, this set maintains the essential qualities of the Staunton pattern’s forms. This trophy or gift set is named for the man who presented it, a member of the British Parliament named Lord Vernon. An inscription on the base of the box that accompanies this set indicated that he presented it as a gift at his residence, Sudbury Hall, in October 1857.

Many of the changes were made to improve the robustness of the chessmen. Among the other changes made were the relative proportions of the chessmen. Boxes housing sets produced after 1895 or so were fitted with a partition which separated the white pieces from the black. A longtime chess fan and competitor, Jon Crumiller purchased his first antique chess set online in 2002. This acquisition quickly sparked a passion, and Jon’s collection of antique sets now numbers over 600.
